mother hubbard ux research project
the Goal
Understand user behaviors around food purchasing, storage, and waste in order to design solutions that encourage more sustainable, everyday habits.
The Challenge
Food waste is a widespread issue driven by inconsistent planning, lack of awareness, and limited tools to help users manage what they already have. The challenge was to uncover how and why waste happens—and design an experience that fits naturally into users’ routines.
The Solution
Using a Double Diamond approach, the project focused on user research into purchasing habits, waste patterns, and digital behaviors. Insights informed key features like inventory awareness, AI-powered suggestions, and community-driven tips—designed to help users take action before food is wasted.
Key Insight → Action
Users often forget what they have or don’t know how to use ingredients before they expire → Provide timely, actionable suggestions (e.g., “Ask MHF”) that turn potential waste into usable solutions
Outcome
The project demonstrates how research-driven UX can influence behavior change. By aligning design decisions with real user habits, the solution shows potential to reduce food waste, increase user awareness, and support more sustainable consumption patterns at scale.
